Steal Your Face is the Grateful Dead’s 1976 live double album, drawn from the October 1974 “farewell run” at Winterland in San Francisco — the five-night stand filmed for The Grateful Dead Movie before the band’s touring hiatus. Released on the band’s own Grateful Dead Records, it catches the 1974 quintet — Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Bill Kreutzmann, and Keith Godchaux — working through the songbook in single-song takes rather than long jams: Bob Weir fronting Johnny Cash’s “Big River,” “El Paso,” and a run of originals from “Sugaree” to “U.S. Blues.” The band itself was famously lukewarm on the record, but its title and Owsley “Bear” Stanley’s lightning-skull cover art named an emblem, and its country covers document how naturally that material lived inside the Dead’s repertoire.
