Steal Your Face is a double live album by the Grateful Dead, released on the band’s own Grateful Dead Records in June 1976. The performances were recorded at Winterland in San Francisco in October 1974, during the run of concerts that preceded the band’s break from touring; the same shows were filmed for The Grateful Dead Movie. Phil Lesh and Owsley Stanley selected the material.
The band on the recordings is Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Bill Kreutzmann, Keith Godchaux and Donna Jean Godchaux. Its fourteen songs are short performances rather than extended jams. Weir sings Johnny Cash’s “Big River,” recorded on 19 October 1974, along with Marty Robbins’s “El Paso” and two Chuck Berry songs, “Promised Land” and “Around and Around.” Garcia sings “Sugaree,” “Stella Blue” and “Casey Jones.” The title comes from a line in “He’s Gone,” a song that is not on the album, and the cover shows the Lightning Skull logo designed by Stanley and drawn by Bob Thomas.
