Stripey Cat

Jeff Norman

Album · 2018 · Self-released

Stripey Cat is a self-released CD by the clawhammer banjoist Jeff Norman, issued in 2018 in a digipak. It was recorded in East Lansing, Michigan, in spring 2018, and Chris Scales recorded, mixed and mastered it and co-produced it with Norman. Norman plays five- and six-string banjo and tenor and baritone ukulele, Molly McBride plays fiddle and Scales plays guitar.

The fourteen tracks are ten traditional fiddle tunes, among them “Texas/Newcastle,” “Spotted Pony,” “Sally in the Garden,” “Five Miles from Town,” “Yew Piney Mountain,” “Swingin’ on a Gate,” “Sandy Boys” and “Hobart’s Breakdown,” and four Norman originals: “Stripey Cat,” “Ducks and Drakes,” “Cheese and Crackers” and “This Way.” The arrangements range from solo banjo, as on “Yew Piney Mountain,” to banjo with fiddle and guitar; on “Dubuque” Norman plays a six-string banjo over a guitar in DADGAD tuning.
