Sweet Sunny South, Larry Stephenson's 1982 solo release on the Outlet label (STLP 1032), was recorded in the fall of 1981 with David Parmley on lead guitar and Don Parmley on harmony vocals (both from the Bluegrass Cardinals), Billy Wheeler on banjo and dobro, Gene Elders on fiddle, and Ed Ferris on bass — supporting Stephenson on mandolin and lead vocals. At the time of recording Stephenson was working with Bill Harrell's Virginians; he would join the Bluegrass Cardinals proper in 1983. The album captures an emerging bluegrass figure at his solo debut, framed by some of the genre's most respected sidemen, and was later reissued on the Webco label.
