Sweet Temptation is Ricky Skaggs's 1979 debut solo album, recorded for Sugar Hill Records and arriving just as Skaggs was establishing himself as one of the most gifted young musicians in the genre. Skaggs had already built an extraordinary resume: years with Ralph Stanley, then with J.D. Crowe's New South, and a partnership with Tony Rice that produced some of the most discussed musicianship of the decade. His mandolin playing was fluid and inventive, his fiddle work equally accomplished, and his high tenor had a clarity that suited both traditional bluegrass and the country-crossover direction he would shortly pursue. The album is a landmark of the progressive traditional moment in bluegrass, precise and passionate in equal measure.
