Take It Home (Sugar Hill SH 3784) was released in 1990, the year Hot Rize disbanded. It was the band’s last studio album until When I’m Free in 2014; the band played reunion dates from 1991 to 1998 and regrouped in 2002. That year the band received the first Entertainer of the Year award given by the International Bluegrass Music Association, and Take It Home was nominated for a Grammy the following year. “Colleen Malone,” the opening track, won the IBMA’s Song of the Year.

The album was recorded at Colorado Sound Recording Studios and produced by Hot Rize, with Kevin Clock as engineer. Most of the thirteen songs use the same instrumentation: Tim O’Brien on mandolin (with fiddle on several tracks) and lead vocals, Charles Sawtelle on guitar, Pete Wernick on banjo and Nick Forster on bass, with Forster and Wernick singing harmony. The exception is “Think of What You’ve Done,” where Sawtelle sings lead and plays mandolin while O’Brien switches to guitar and fiddle. “Rocky Road Blues” is credited to Bill Monroe, and the band’s own members are credited with “Bending Blades” (O’Brien), “Gone Fishing” and “The Old Rounder” (Wernick) and “Climb the Ladder” (Forster). “Gone Fishing” is an instrumental.
