Take It Home, released on Sugar Hill in 1990, was the last studio album of Hot Rize's original run, recorded as the band wound down more than a decade as a full-time act. The Colorado quartet — Tim O'Brien's mandolin and tenor, Pete Wernick's rolling banjo, Charles Sawtelle's guitar, and Nick Forster's bass — had built a reputation as one of the most musically literate groups in bluegrass, equally at home with hard-driving traditional numbers and material that reached toward country and swing. The set draws on that full range, from a reading of Bill Monroe's 'Rocky Road Blues' to the band's own writing, and it earned a Grammy nomination. Hot Rize would reconvene for occasional reunions in the years that followed, but Take It Home stands as the considered close of their first chapter — assured, well-chosen, and played with the ease of long familiarity.
