The Bluegrass Album, Vol. 4 cover

The Bluegrass Album, Vol. 4 was released by Rounder in 1985 (Rounder 0210). It is the fourth record by the Bluegrass Album Band, which Tony Rice and J. D. Crowe founded in 1980 and whose first album appeared in 1981. Rice produced it and wrote the sleeve notes, and Bill Wolf recorded and mixed it, at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley, California, and Track Recorders in Silver Spring, Maryland.

The band is Rice on guitar and lead vocals, Crowe on banjo, Doyle Lawson on mandolin, Bobby Hicks on fiddle, Jerry Douglas on Dobro and Todd Phillips on bass. Lawson sings tenor and Crowe baritone on most of the vocal tracks, and Douglas adds a second baritone part on six of them: “Cora Is Gone,” “Head Over Heels,” “Nobody Loves Me,” “When You Are Lonely,” “Lonesome Wind Blues” and “Somehow Tonight.” Rice sings “The Old Home Town” alone, and “Cheyenne” is an instrumental.

The eleven tracks range from Jim Croce’s “Age” to Lester Flatt’s “The Old Home Town” and “Head Over Heels,” Earl Scruggs’s “Somehow Tonight” and Zeke Clements’s “Nobody Loves Me.” “Cheyenne” is credited to Bill Monroe and Bobby Hicks.
