“I Might Take You Back Again” was written by LeRoy “Mack” McNees, the dobroist of the Kentucky Colonels, the California bluegrass band that featured the guitarist Clarence White. (The Bluegrass Album Band’s 1985 liner credits Josh Graves as co-writer, but the original 1963 release — and every other source — credits McNees alone.) It appeared on the band’s mid-1960s recordings.
The song is a wary love song. The singer, hurt by a partner who left, holds the door open only part way: he might take her back, the lyric says, but the offer comes guarded, the trust not yet restored.
The song carried into the wider bluegrass repertoire.
