The New Sound of Bluegrass America is a 1963 album released by the Kentucky Colonels on Briar Records (LP-P C 109). The recording lineup features Clarence White (guitar, vocals), Billy Ray Latham (banjo), Roger Bush (bass), and Leroy Mack McNees (dobro); Roland White was serving in the U.S. Army and does not appear. Recorded when Clarence was still a teenager, the set demonstrates the precocious flatpicking voice he was developing—rooted in Appalachian tradition but reaching toward a more expansive melodic vocabulary—establishing the Colonels as one of Southern California's premier bluegrass acts and previewing the technical mastery Clarence would bring to The Byrds and beyond.
