Jim Lauderdale and Roland White is a collaboration record pairing two artists with deep roots in West Coast and Nashville bluegrass. Roland White spent years with Lester Flatt's Nashville Grass and is one of the finest mandolin players the genre has produced, a stylist of unusual lyrical sensitivity. Lauderdale, who would later build an extensive career in country and Americana as both performer and songwriter, shows his bluegrass roots clearly in this partnership. White's mandolin work is authoritative and measured, rooted in the Monroe tradition but individualistic. The album pairs a master instrumentalist with a vocalist of genuine range.
