Jim Lauderdale and Roland White

Album · 2018 · Yep Roc YEP 2597

Jim Lauderdale and Roland White was recorded in Nashville in the summer of 1979, in the basement of Earl and Louise Scruggs’ home, and was not released until 2018, when Yep Roc issued it (YEP 2597). Lauderdale, a North Carolina native, had just finished college and spent five months in Nashville that summer trying to land a recording or publishing deal; he spent much of his time with the mandolin player Roland White, and the two made this record. Nothing came of it then, and Lauderdale moved to New York City.

The master tapes were lost over the following decades and were found nearly forty years later at the bottom of a box by White’s wife. The twelve tracks had never been released. Lauderdale plays guitar and White mandolin; the other players are not documented. The songs include “Six White Horses,” “Nashville Blues,” “Gonna Lay Down My Old Guitar” and “Stone Must Be the Walls Built Around Your Heart.” The label describes it as Lauderdale’s first full-length record and his first Yep Roc release in more than ten years.

White, born in Maine in 1938, had played in the Kentucky Colonels, joined Bill Monroe’s Blue Grass Boys in 1967, and from 1969 to 1973 was a member of Lester Flatt’s Nashville Grass. He was inducted into the International Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame in 2017 and died in 2022.
