The Crossing is a 1999 album released by Tim O'Brien on Alula Records (ALU-1014), a concept project tracing the shared roots of traditional Irish music and Appalachian and bluegrass traditions. O'Brien (mandolin, guitar, bouzouki, vocals) assembles a remarkable multinational cast including Seamus Egan and Máiréad Ní Mhaonaigh of Altan, Frankie Gavin of De Dannan, Del McCoury, Earl Scruggs, Kathy Mattea, Darrell Scott, Stuart Duncan, Mike Marshall, Dirk Powell, and Edgar Meyer, among many others. The album weaves Irish tunes and American folk songs into a continuous cross-Atlantic dialogue, produced by O'Brien and Alula founder Akira Satake, and stands as one of the most ambitious Celtic–Americana crossover projects of its era.
