The Dark is Guy Clark’s 2002 album for Sugar Hill Records (SUG-CD-1070), produced by Clark with Verlon Thompson, Darrell Scott and engineer Chris Latham, and cut in the spare, conversational manner of his later work. Those three are the record: Thompson on guitar, vocals and percussion, Scott moving between baritone guitar, dobro, mandolin, banjo, mandocello, accordion, marimbula and bass, and Clark singing and playing guitar throughout.
Twelve songs. It holds “Magnolia Wind” and “Soldier’s Joy, 1864” from the Sis Draper cycle Clark wrote with Shawn Camp — Camp and Tim O’Brien both play fiddle on the latter — alongside Townes Van Zandt’s “Rex’s Blues,” the title track, and “Queenie’s Song,” written after Clark’s dog was shot. Gillian Welch and David Rawlings sing harmony on “Arizona Star.” The album was nominated for the Grammy for Best Contemporary Folk Album.
