The Gilded Palace of Sin is the 1969 debut of the Flying Burrito Brothers, released on A&M and recorded by the band Gram Parsons and Chris Hillman formed after leaving the Byrds, with “Sneaky” Pete Kleinow on pedal steel and Chris Ethridge on bass. It opens with the Parsons–Hillman originals “Christine’s Tune” and “Sin City” and runs honky-tonk songwriting through rock rhythm, gospel-soul covers of “Dark End of the Street” and “Do Right Woman,” and Kleinow’s fuzz-driven steel. The record sold poorly on release but became a foundation stone of country-rock — Rolling Stone has ranked it among the greatest albums ever made — and its songs moved quickly into the repertoires of Emmylou Harris, J.D. Crowe, and the bluegrass world. The nudie-suited cover photograph, shot in the California desert, is nearly as famous as the music.
