The Flying Burrito Brothers were the Los Angeles band that, more than any other, invented country-rock — formed in 1968 by Gram Parsons and Chris Hillman after both left the Byrds, with “Sneaky” Pete Kleinow on pedal steel and Chris Ethridge on bass.

- Their 1969 debut The Gilded Palace of Sin (A&M) opened with the Parsons–Hillman originals “Christine’s Tune” and “Sin City” and set honky-tonk songwriting against rock rhythm and steel guitar — a commercial failure that became one of the most influential albums of its era.
- Parsons left in 1970 after the second album, Burrito Deluxe; Hillman led later lineups that included Bernie Leadon, who went on to co-found the Eagles, and bluegrass players Byron Berline and Roger Bush.
- The band’s repertoire passed quickly into the bluegrass and country worlds — “Sin City” especially, through duet and trio covers in the decades since.
