The Great Stonemans (MGM Records SE 4578) is a studio album from the Stoneman Family, the Galax, Virginia-rooted ensemble that sustained the musical legacy of Ernest "Pop" Stoneman across multiple generations and performing configurations, presenting the family's traditional mountain music and country material to the mainstream country market through their MGM Records contract. Ernest Stoneman plays guitar and sings; Donna Stoneman plays mandolin and sings; Scotty Stoneman plays fiddle; Jimmy Stoneman holds the bass; and Van Stoneman contributes additional work. MGM SE 4578 documents the Stonemans during their most commercially active period, when Scotty Stoneman's fiddle virtuosity — one of the most discussed instrumental performances of the folk revival era — and the family's collective performing energy had earned them a national reputation well beyond the traditional mountain audiences their music originated in.
