Van Stoneman was the youngest surviving son of Ernest "Pop" Stoneman and a guitarist in the second-generation Stoneman Family band — part of the 1967 CMA Vocal Group of the Year-winning lineup that toured the 1960s folk circuit and briefly had its own TV show.
- Born Van Haden Stoneman, December 31, 1940 in Washington, D.C.; fifteenth and youngest surviving child of Ernest "Pop" Stoneman and Hattie Frost Stoneman.
- Second-generation member of the Stoneman family bands, beginning with The Blue Grass Champs.
- By 1961 was a member of the Stoneman Family act on guitar, alongside siblings Scott (fiddle), Donna (mandolin), Jim (bass), and Roni (banjo), with Pop as featured singer.
- Performed during the 1960s folk-music boom; the family relocated to Los Angeles and briefly had their own TV show ("Those Stonemans").
- Played notable venues including the Fillmore Auditorium, the UCLA Folk Festival, and the Monterey Folk Festival.
- Part of the Stoneman Family group that won CMA Vocal Group of the Year in 1967.
- Continued touring with sisters Patti, Donna, Roni and brother Jimmy after Pop's 1968 death; Jim and Van's health problems effectively ended the band by 1993.
