Old-Time Tunes of the South (Folkways Records FA 2315) is a studio album from Ernest "Pop" Stoneman and family, presenting the Galax, Virginia old-time musician whose 1927 recordings for Gennett and other labels had made him one of the pioneering figures in the commercial documentation of Southern folk music, captured here in a Folkways album that brought his traditional repertoire to the urban folk revival audience. Ernest Stoneman plays autoharp, banjo, fiddle, and sings; Hattie Stoneman sings and plays; Van Stoneman contributes instrumental and vocal work; and Gene Cox plays additional instruments. Folkways Records, which had become the foremost academic documentation of folk traditions since Moses Asch founded the label in 1948, gave Stoneman and his family a platform that situated the Galax old-time tradition within the ethnomusicological context the folk revival demanded.
