Cuttin’ the Grass

The Stoneman Family

Album · 1976 · CMH CMH 6210

Cuttin' the Grass (CMH Records CMH-6210, 1976) is a studio album from the Stonemans, the continuing ensemble built around Van Stoneman and Patsy Stoneman following the deaths of their father, Ernest "Pop" Stoneman, in 1968 and their brother Scotty in 1973. Van Stoneman plays guitar throughout; Patsy Stoneman plays guitar, autoharp, jaw harp, and tambourine; Dave Dougherty plays banjo; Jimmy Stoneman holds the bass; and Johnny Bellar plays resonator guitar. Recorded at Arthur Smith Studios in Charlotte, North Carolina, with liner notes by Ranger Doug, the album is a return-to-roots bluegrass and traditional country statement at a moment when the ensemble was carrying the family's musical legacy without its most storied founding members. Dougherty, a banjoist who had spent years learning tunes directly from Patsy Stoneman, anchors the bluegrass rhythm section alongside Jimmy Stoneman's bass in what stands as a late-period document of the family's enduring commitment to the tradition.
