Blue Grass Champs (Starday Records SLP-275, 1962) is a studio album from Ernest V. Stoneman and his family ensemble, recorded in Nashville during the height of the urban folk revival and presenting the Stoneman Family's hard-driving Appalachian string-band tradition to a new generation of listeners. Ernest "Pop" Stoneman plays autoharp and guitar and sings; Donna Stoneman plays mandolin and sings; Roni Stoneman plays banjo and sings; Van Stoneman plays guitar and sings; and Hattie Stoneman and Patsy Stoneman contribute vocals and additional instrumental parts. The Stoneman Family — rooted in the Appalachian tradition Pop had recorded since the acoustic era of the 1920s — became one of the most celebrated multi-generational country and bluegrass ensembles of the 1960s, and Blue Grass Champs documents the family unit presenting its heritage repertoire at a moment when the urban folk market had created new audiences for authentic Southern mountain music.
