The Highway Kind was released by Sugar Hill Records (SHCD-1056) in 1997, the year Townes Van Zandt died; he died on January 1. The album draws on recordings from his last years and combines studio and concert performances: unreleased studio recordings of two covers, “Lost Highway” and “Wreck on the Highway,” and live solo versions of three songs from No Deeper Blue, his last widely released studio album, along with such lesser-known originals as “My Proud Mountains” and “Rake.”

The fourteen tracks also include “Dublin Blues,” a song by his friend Guy Clark, “The Hole,” “Highway Kind,” “Lover’s Lullaby,” “Darcy Farrow” and “Ira Hayes.” “Lost Highway” is Leon Payne’s song, written and first recorded in 1948 and later recorded by Hank Williams.
