The Highway Kind is a 1997 posthumous album released by Townes Van Zandt on Sugar Hill Records (SHCD-1056), assembled by road manager Harold Eggers from late-career live recordings and a handful of studio covers following Van Zandt's death on January 1, 1997. Van Zandt (guitar, vocals) performs in a characteristically spare mode throughout a program that includes originals "Rake" and "The Hole" alongside covers of Guy Clark's "Dublin Blues," Hank Williams's "Lost Highway," and others. The compilation captures the worn, lived-in quality of his final years while maintaining the lyrical precision that defined his work across three decades of recording.
