The Jacob Jolliff Band is the second album by the mandolinist’s band, after Instrumentals Vol. 1 (2018), released on 5 August 2022 on Adhâropa Records (ÂR00010). Jolliff grew up near Portland, Oregon, and started on mandolin at seven in a bluegrass gospel band led by his father. He went to Berklee College of Music on a full scholarship in 2007, won the National Mandolin Championship soon after graduating, and played with Joy Kills Sorrow and then Yonder Mountain String Band, with whom he toured from 2014 until the end of 2019.

The band on the record is Jolliff with Stash Wyslouch on guitar, John Mailander on fiddle and Myles Sloniker on bass. Seven of the eleven tracks are songs: “Columbus Stockade Blues,” the Easter Brothers’ gospel song “They’re Holding Up the Ladder,” Jo Dee Messina’s “Heads Carolina, Tails California,” Malcolm McKinney’s “Don’t Cry Blue,” known from Jonathan Edwards’s recording, Suzy Bogguss’s “Outbound Plane,” Jolliff’s arrangement of “Green Green Rocky Road,” and “Middle of the Moon” by Adam Sweeney, another Portland musician. The other four are instrumentals, among them Jolliff’s “The Good, the Bad and the Home-Schooled,” which works bebop lines into a bluegrass setting, and “One Night in Glasgow,” on which his mandolin and Mailander’s fiddle play the melody in harmony.
