The John Hartford Fiddle Tune Project Vol. 1

Matt Combs

Album · 2020 · Not On Label

The John Hartford Fiddle Tune Project, Volume 1 (StuffWorks Recordings, 2020) is a studio album drawn from fiddle tunes discovered in John Hartford's unpublished notebooks after his death in 2001 — among more than 2,000 original compositions Hartford wrote but never recorded in the last eighteen years of his life. Matt Combs plays fiddle and produced the project; Ronnie McCoury plays mandolin; Noam Pikelny plays banjo; Chris Eldridge plays guitar; and Dennis Crouch holds the bass, with additional contributions from a rotating cast that includes Alison Brown, Sierra Hull, Tim O'Brien, and others across the album's tracks. The project was released alongside a companion volume, John Hartford's Mammoth Collection of Fiddle Tunes, establishing a dual documentary purpose: giving Hartford's unrecorded compositions both a performance archive and a published tune book, and inaugurating the first systematic effort to bring this posthumous catalog into recorded form.
