The Leap Year Sessions Vol. 1, released March 19, 2021 on Big Blue Zoo Records, is a remastered live-in-studio Greensky Bluegrass set drawn from pandemic-era webcasts the band performed while touring was shut down. The full quintet — Anders Beck on Dobro, Michael Arlen Bont on banjo, Dave Bruzza on guitar, Mike Devol on upright bass, Paul Hoffman on mandolin — work through originals and covers sourced from the first two of eight Friday-night livestream concerts the band performed in August and September 2020. The record sits within a small but distinct genre of pandemic releases: studio-quality live documents recorded in lieu of touring, capturing how the band kept working during the eighteen-month shutdown.
