Paul Hoffman
Paul Hoffman is a Michigan-born mandolinist, lead singer, and primary songwriter of Greensky Bluegrass — the de facto leader of one of the most prominent jam-grass bands of the twenty-first century, whose songwriting brought "Stress Dreams" (2022) and decades of festival staples.
- Born 1981; raised in Muskegon, Michigan; moved to Kalamazoo to study English Literature, where Greensky Bluegrass came together.
- Co-founder, mandolinist, lead singer, and primary songwriter of Greensky Bluegrass (formed Kalamazoo, MI, fall 2000).
- Played guitar from age 12; bought a mandolin at 18 after seeing David Grisman perform.
- Came to bluegrass through the Grateful Dead, David Grisman, and Old & In The Way.
- Widely regarded as the de facto leader of Greensky and a touchstone of modern bluegrass/jam songwriting.
- Wrote "Grow Together" (off "Stress Dreams," 2022) shortly after the birth of his daughter, expressing appreciation for his wife and fatherhood.
- Tours occasionally as a solo act ("Paul Hoffman: On Tour, Solo"), often with Andy Dunnigan.
