Ronnie Bowman's The Man I'm Tryin' To Be, released on Sugar Hill Records (SH 3880) in 1998, is his second solo album, co-produced with Dan Tyminski. Tyminski plays guitar, mandolin, and sings harmony; Tim Stafford, guitar; Alan Bibey, mandolin; Ron Block, banjo; Aubrey Haynie, fiddle; Jerry Douglas, dobro; and Barry Bales, upright bass. The Union Station connection—Tyminski, Block, Douglas, and Bales all active members of Alison Krauss & Union Station at the time—lends the record an unmistakable burnished authority. Bowman's resonant baritone and direct melodic instincts anchor the set as a mature and focused showcase of contemporary bluegrass craftsmanship following his years fronting the Lonesome River Band.
