The Model Church is a gospel album by J.D. Crowe and the Kentucky Mountain Boys, recorded at Lemco Studios in Lexington, Kentucky, and issued on Lemco LP 611 in 1971. Crowe played banjo, Doyle Lawson guitar, Larry Rice mandolin and Bobby Slone bass, the same lineup as on Crowe’s preceding Lemco album, Ramblin’ Boy. Lawson left the band later that year to join the Country Gentlemen.
The eleven songs include two Jim and Jesse McReynolds numbers, “Are You Lost in Sin” and “Look for Me”; “No Mother or Dad,” credited to Lester Flatt and Curly Seckler; and “Goin’ Up,” credited to the Gosdin Brothers. The title song, “The Model Church,” carries an arrangement credit to Lawson, and two more are credited to Lawson and Crowe together (“I Shall Be at Home with Jesus” and “It’s Me Again Lord”). Rebel Records reissued the album in 1978 as SLP 1585.
