The New Seldom Scene Album is a 1976 release on Rebel Records (SLP 1561), the band's sixth studio recording and last with their classic original lineup before John Starling's departure. John Duffey (mandolin, vocals), John Starling (guitar, vocals), Mike Auldridge (dobro, vocals), Ben Eldridge (banjo, vocals), and Tom Gray (bass, vocals) recorded the set at Bias Recording in Falls Church, Virginia. Linda Ronstadt contributes harmony vocal on "California Earthquake," a high-profile cameo that reflected the Seldom Scene's reach beyond the bluegrass community. The album documents the original lineup at the height of its ensemble cohesion before Starling's exit to focus on his medical career altered the group's character.
