The News Is Out, Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver's 1987 Sugar Hill release (SH-3757), returns the band to secular bluegrass with a new lineup that introduced Russell Moore on lead vocals — the singer who would later anchor IIIrd Tyme Out — alongside Lawson on mandolin. The album mixes original material with compositions from Randall Hylton, frames the band's nods toward Bill Monroe and Gene Autry against contemporary songwriting, and brings Jerry Douglas in on dobro to round out the sound. Like every Quicksilver record, it serves as a record of the next generation of bluegrass talent passing through Lawson's band — a function the group performed for over four decades.
