The Peer Sessions (Audium Entertainment, 2002) draws on recordings Haggard made between 1996 and 1998 during his Curb Records tenure, shelved before Audium issued them. The project is rooted in the Ralph S. Peer publishing catalog — the foundational early country and folk library that includes Jimmie Rodgers, Jimmie Davis, Floyd Tillman, and Tommy Duncan. Twelve standards from that repertoire form the program, with Haggard stripping away production flash to deliver a spare, reverent tribute to the songwriters who shaped the country and Western genre he spent his career advancing. The result is among the most historically minded recordings of his later catalog, connecting his honky-tonk voice directly to the pre-rock Americana tradition from which it sprang.
