The Puritan Session is a 1989 Rebel Records CD (REB-1108) compiling two albums by Kenny Baker and Josh Graves recorded for Chicago's Puritan label: the first (Puritan 5001) at Audio Finishers in Chicago in April 1972, and the second (Puritan 5005) at Custom Audio in Des Plaines, Illinois, in January 1973. Both sessions were produced by Dave Samuelson. Baker—Bill Monroe's long-tenured fiddle player—plays lead guitar on these recordings, a rare departure from the instrument most associated with him; both sessions predate the 1977 nerve injury that would limit his guitar work. Graves, who had just departed Lester Flatt's Nashville Grass, plays dobro. The pair are backed by Bob Martin (rhythm guitar) and Roger Bellow (bass). The sessions document two of bluegrass's greatest instrumentalists exploring blues and string-band territory outside the festival format.
