The Railsplitters is the Colorado band’s debut album, self-released in November 2013 after a crowdfunding campaign. It was recorded at Swingfingers Studio, with Aaron Youngberg as recording and mixing engineer and the band as producers.
The band is Lauren Stovall on guitar and lead vocals, Dusty Rider on banjo, Peter Sharpe on mandolin and Leslie Ziegler on bass. All four contribute songs: Rider and Sharpe wrote “My World” together, Stovall wrote “Jackson Town” and “Family Waltz,” Katy Bowser’s “Where You Are” and Randall Hylton’s “Room at the Top of the Stairs” are among the outside songs, and Bill Henson is credited with “Lonesome Feeling.” Three tracks, “Evil Apple,” “Longs Peak” and “Spray,” are instrumentals. Enion Pelta-Tiller plays fiddle as a guest on “My World” and “Evil Apple,” and Andy Hall plays Dobro on “Where You Are” and “Spray.”
The group grew out of informal picking sessions in Colorado. Its first gig was billed as “Lauren & Friends”; bassist Leslie Ziegler came up with the name, taken from the mascot of a local school district, and within a year or so of that first gig in 2012 the band was playing its own songs.
