The Road West, released in 2005 on Corvus Records (CR 012), is the third album by John Reischman and the Jaybirds, the Vancouver-based mandolinist's working band. The lineup pairs Reischman on mandolin with Trisha Gagnon on bass and vocals, Nick Hornbuckle on two-finger banjo, Jim Nunally on guitar and vocals, and Greg Spatz on fiddle. The arrangements are clean, traditional-leaning bluegrass shaped by Reischman's lyrical mandolin and the Gagnon-Nunally duet harmonies, with a Canadian Pacific Northwest sensibility distinct from the Nashville mainstream. The record followed the JUNO-nominated Field Guide and cemented the Jaybirds as Canada's pre-eminent bluegrass export. Reischman's Don Stover composition on the album nodded to his earlier roots in the Bay Area's Good Ol' Persons.
