The Rock I Stand On, released by Rebel Records in 1994, is one of Larry Sparks's gospel projects from his long Rebel run — twelve sacred numbers including the title piece, Tell 'Em About Jesus, Green Pastures in the Sky, Empty Mansion, Thank You Lord, and Where Shall I Be. Sparks's distinctive bluesy guitar work and soulful lead vocal — the qualities that had defined his sound since the Clinch Mountain Boys days — carry the spiritual material with the same intensity he brought to his secular work. The Rebel gospel albums Sparks released steadily across the 1980s and 1990s became one of the most respected bodies of bluegrass-gospel work of the era.
