The Sparrow Quartet EP (Nettwerk Records, 2008) is a five-track extended play from the chamber-bluegrass ensemble of Abigail Washburn on clawhammer banjo and vocals, Bela Fleck on five-string banjo, Ben Sollee on cello, and Casey Driessen on fiddle. Released to precede the ensemble's full-length album of the same year, the EP presents the Sparrow Quartet's distinctive cross-genre synthesis in compressed form: bluegrass instrumental virtuosity, chamber music timbres, old-time repertoire, and the counterpoint of Washburn's clawhammer technique against Fleck's three-finger approach. The catalog personnel entry lists only Karl Lauber, which appears to be a data error — Lauber is not a Sparrow Quartet member, and the album's actual performers are the four musicians documented under the companion full-length album entry. The EP is otherwise identical in character and instrumentation to its companion record.
