The True Meaning of Christmas is a 1963 Christmas album by Don Reno, Red Smiley and the Tennessee Cutups, released by King (King 874) in December 1963. It was recorded on June 4 and 5, 1963, at King’s studio in Cincinnati, with Red Smiley on guitar, Don Reno on banjo, Ronnie Reno on mandolin, Mack Magaha on fiddle, Steve Chapman on electric guitar and John Palmer on bass. It mixes carols and pop standards such as “Blue Christmas” and “Frosty the Snowman” with two Jim Eanes songs, “Christmas Doll” and “It Won’t Be Like Christmas,” and has two instrumentals, “Jingle Bells” and “It Came Upon a Midnight Clear.” King reissued it on LP in 1976 and on CD in 1988, and Gusto put it out again on CD in 2008.
