The WDON recordings

Red Allen

Album · 1963 · Patuxent CD 258

The WDON Recordings (Patuxent CD-258, 2014) collects twenty-two informal radio broadcasts taped in 1963 at the home studio of banjo player Pete Kuykendall — who would go on to found Bluegrass Unlimited magazine — with Tom Morgan on bass. Allen and Wakefield had relocated to the Washington, D.C. area in 1959 and built a devoted regional following, and these recordings catch them at their most spontaneous: Wakefield's fiery, inventive mandolin alongside Allen's raw, emotionally direct singing. Unearthed and issued by Patuxent Music in 2014, the sessions are a primary document of the hard-edged "northward migration" bluegrass style that flourished around the nation's capital in the early 1960s.
