Then and Now, released by Poppy Records in 1973 (PP-LA022-F), is the Doc Watson and Merle Watson album that won Doc his first Grammy — the 1974 award for Best Ethnic or Traditional Folk Recording. The album frames Doc's astonishing flatpick guitar and warm North Carolina baritone with Merle's accompaniment as the father-son working partnership that would carry through most of Doc's most productive period. The "then and now" title gestures at the album's mix of traditional material and Doc's contemporary work, with the program ranging across the folk and bluegrass repertoire he had been building since his 1960s emergence. The Grammy validated what Doc's audience had known for years.
