"Through the Morning, Through the Night," released in September 1969 on A&M Records (AMLS 966), is the second and final album by Dillard & Clark — the duo of ex-Byrds singer Gene Clark and ex-Dillards banjoist Doug Dillard, joined here by Byron Berline (fiddle), Donna Washburn (guitar, vocals), and David Jackson (bass, piano, cello). Guests include Bernie Leadon, Chris Hillman, and Sneaky Pete Kleinow. Compared to their debut "The Fantastic Expedition of Dillard & Clark" (1968) — a landmark of the Los Angeles country-rock movement — this record leaned harder into traditional folk and bluegrass. Gene Clark departed after its release. The album's stature rose dramatically when Alison Krauss and Robert Plant covered two of its tracks — "Through the Morning, Through the Night" and "Polly" — on their 2007 album "Raising Sand."
