Time Again, released in 2004 on Rounder (11661-0519-2), is Dirk Powell's second solo album of traditional Appalachian old-time, released on the heels of his acclaimed playing on the Cold Mountain soundtrack. Powell plays banjo, fiddle, guitar, and sings, with a guest list pulled from the heart of the contemporary old-time scene — Riley Baugus, Tom and Patrick Sauber, Tim O'Brien, Darrell Scott, Jim Miller, Caleb Klauder, and Sammy Lind of the Foghorn Stringband. The record splices in lo-fi field tapes of Powell as a child playing banjo, fiddle, and guitar with his Kentucky grandfather, anchoring the modern playing in the source it came from. The result is rural, unhurried, and ghost-haunted — fiddle and banjo instrumentals alongside ballad singing.
