Tougher Than Nails, released in 2023, found the SteelDrivers continuing to develop the blue-collar Southern soul-bluegrass fusion they had pioneered since the band's formation in Nashville in 2007. The group had undergone significant personnel changes since their Grammy-winning debut, most notably the departure of founding vocalist Chris Stapleton, and by 2023 were operating with a lineup that maintained the core guitar-banjo-fiddle-mandolin-bass instrumentation while bringing new vocal character to the band's established sound. The album demonstrated the band's continued commitment to the hard-edged original songwriting that had defined them from the beginning.
