Town and Country cover

Town and Country (Columbia CL 2443) was released on 15 January 1966. Its twelve tracks were recorded at Columbia’s studio on 16th Avenue South in Nashville on 2 and 3 September and 8 October 1965, with Don Law and Frank Jones producing.

Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs were joined by Paul Warren on fiddle and Josh “Buck” Graves on dobro, with Grady Martin on guitar and Charlie McCoy on harmonica; Jake Tullock, who also sings tenor, is credited on bass for most of the tracks. Scruggs’s “Foggy Mountain Breakdown,” which Flatt and Scruggs first recorded in Cincinnati on 11 December 1949, opens the album in a new recording.

Five titles name cities: “Memphis” (Chuck Berry), “Houston” (Lee Hazlewood), “Kansas City,” “Detroit City” (Mel Tillis and Danny Dill) and “Seattle Town.” Two songs are by T. T. Hall, “The Last Public Hanging in West Virginia” and “The Boys from Tennessee,” and “Take Me Back to Tulsa” is by Bob Wills and Tommy Duncan.
