Townes Van Zandt was his third studio album, following For the Sake of the Song (1968) and Our Mother the Mountain (1969). Poppy Records issued it in September 1969 (PYS 40007). It was recorded in July 1969 at Bradley’s Barn in Mount Juliet, Tennessee, and produced by Kevin Eggers and Jim Malloy. Ten songs, all by Van Zandt, are on the record, among them “Colorado Girl,” “Columbine,” “Don’t Take It Too Bad,” “Fare Thee Well, Miss Carousel,” the mining ballad “Lungs” and “None but the Rain.”

Four of the songs are new versions of numbers from his 1968 debut: “Waitin’ Around to Die,” the first song he ever wrote, “I’ll Be Here in the Morning” (first titled “I’ll Be There in the Morning”), “For the Sake of the Song” and “(Quicksilver Daydreams of) Maria.” Van Zandt remade them because he had been unhappy with the heavy production they were given the first time. The cover photograph was taken by Sol Mednick in the kitchen of Milton Glaser, Poppy’s art designer, and shows Van Zandt seated at a table with his eyes closed; some fans know the album as The Kitchen Album.
