Train a Comin’ is Steve Earle’s first album after his drug conviction and recovery in 1994, and his first in five years. It was released on Winter Harvest (WH 3302-2) on 28 February 1995. It was recorded in Nashville at Magic Tracks and Masterfonics, and Earle produced it with his friend William Alsobrook, and it was recorded in about five days. Earle has said he was after the sound of old Opry recordings, with the players stepping up to a shared microphone.

Earle plays guitar, high-string guitar, twelve-string guitar and mandolin, and sings. Peter Rowan plays mandolin and mandola and gut-string guitar and sings, Norman Blake plays guitar, Hawaiian guitar, dobro, mandolin and fiddle, and Roy Huskey Jr. plays acoustic bass. Emmylou Harris sings on “I’m Nothin’ Without You” and “Rivers of Babylon.” Earle wrote nine of the thirteen songs, including “Hometown Blues,” “Goodbye,” “Ben McCulloch” and “Mystery Train Part II”; the others are Townes Van Zandt’s “Tecumseh Valley,” the Beatles’ “I’m Looking Through You,” the reggae song “Rivers of Babylon,” and Blake’s instrumental “Northern Winds.” The album was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album, which went to Emmylou Harris’s Wrecking Ball.
