Transatlantic Sessions 5, Vol. 3, released on Whirlie Records in 2011–12, is the concluding volume of the fifth series of the long-running BBC Scotland and RTÉ Ireland collaborative concert project. Permanent co-directors Aly Bain on Shetland fiddle and Jerry Douglas on dobro anchor the set; the American contingent on Series 5 includes Béla Fleck (banjo), Dirk Powell (guitar, banjo, accordion), Sam Bush (mandolin, fiddle), Alison Krauss, and Sarah Jarosz, alongside Scottish and Irish trad voices including Sharon Shannon, Donal Lunny, and Eddi Reader. Filmed at Glen Lyon, Perthshire, the Transatlantic Sessions project—launched in 1995—remains the most sustained formal conversation between Celtic traditional music and American roots music on record.
