Trying to Get to You was released by Sugar Hill Records on August 15, 1994 (SH-CD 3826), after Roland White’s 1976 solo album I Wasn’t Born to Rock ‘n Roll. White, the brother of Clarence White, had played in the Kentucky Colonels, Bill Monroe’s Blue Grass Boys, Lester Flatt’s Nashville Grass and Country Gazette, and was a member of the Nashville Bluegrass Band when the album was made.

Butch Baldassari produced it and Rich Adler recorded and mixed it at Suite 2000. White plays mandolin; the same band is credited on every track: David Grier on guitar, Richard Bailey on banjo, Stuart Duncan on fiddle, Gene Wooten on dobro and Gene Libbea on bass. The singers vary by song. Alan O’Bryant sings the title song, Pat Enright sings “The Wall Around My Heart,” and Diane Bouska sings four tracks, including “Lucky Break” and “Midnight.” White takes the lead on “Toy Heart,” “Crazy Blues,” “Oceans of Diamonds” and “Roll Along Kentucky Moon.” Marty Stuart and White wrote the liner notes.
