Roland White's Trying to Get to You, released on Sugar Hill Records (SH-CD 3826) in 1994, is the Kentucky Colonels and Nashville Bluegrass Band mandolinist's long-awaited solo debut. Gene Wooten plays dobro; Stuart Duncan, fiddle; Gene Libbea, upright bass. Note: catalog-listed Jesse Lee Campbell and Mike Canney's specific instruments are unconfirmed; additional sources credit David Grier (guitar) and Richard Bailey (banjo) to the session. Recorded at Suite 2000 in Nashville, the album affirms White's standing as one of bluegrass's most elegant and tradition-rooted mandolinists—brother of the late Clarence White—and foreshadowed his departure from the Nashville Bluegrass Band to lead his own touring ensemble under his own name.
