Wake Up Darlin’ Corey

Art Stamper

Album · 2004

Wake Up Darlin' Corey (County Records, 2004) is a traditional fiddle album from Art Stamper — a Kentucky mountain fiddler who played with the Stanley Brothers in their early years and whose playing preserved the raw, modal approach of eastern Kentucky old-time fiddle tradition. Tim O'Brien contributes guitar and lead vocals on several tracks, lending the session an acoustic partner of complementary skill and range. Stamper recorded relatively little across his long career, and this proved to be his final recording — a late-career statement of a regional fiddle style with few surviving practitioners at this level of authenticity. The album captures a playing approach absorbed in the Kentucky mountains in an era before commercial country had homogenized regional fiddle traditions, and documents a musician who kept that inheritance intact over a long lifetime of playing without compromise.
