Wake Up Darlin’ Corey (County Records CO-CD-2736) was released in 2004 and was the last album fiddler Art Stamper made. Born in Knott County, Kentucky, in 1933, he had taken part in the Stanley Brothers’ first Mercury session in August 1953 before military service, later recorded with the Osborne Brothers and Red Allen, and made his first solo album, The Lost Fiddler, in 1982. He died on 23 January 2005, a few months after the International Bluegrass Music Association gave him its Distinguished Achievement award.

The album was recorded on 14 and 15 February 2004 at Andrews Recording Service in Louisville. Stamper plays fiddle with Doc Hamilton on guitar and Harry Bickel on banjo; Tim O’Brien plays guitar on three of the fourteen tracks (“Little Birdie,” “Train Forty Five” and “Lorena”) and sings on a few. The tunes are drawn mostly from Kentucky fiddlers. Among them is “Sweet Dixie,” which Bill Emerson wrote as a bluegrass banjo piece and Stamper turned into an old-time fiddle tune.
