"Warring Cats," originally released as a cassette in 1993 on Tree Frog Music and reissued on CD in 2002, is a 16-track old-time trio recording featuring Bruce Molsky (fiddle, vocals), Audrey Molsky (guitar), and Dirk Powell (banjo, guitar). Powell — later known as a collaborator with Loretta Lynn, Jack White, and as a film score composer — was at this point a young but already accomplished old-time multi-instrumentalist. Engineered by Cathy Fink, the record captures Appalachian dance tunes, songs, and fiddle breakdowns in a spare trio format and is considered a foundational document of the 1990s old-time revival. It stands as one of Molsky's earliest proper recordings and marks an important early chapter in his emergence as a defining voice of the movement.
