We’re Usually a Lot Better Than This is a live album by Tim O’Brien and Darrell Scott, released on 9 October 2012 on Scott’s Full Light Records through Thirty Tigers. It was recorded at two concerts at the Grey Eagle in Asheville, North Carolina, in 2005 and 2006. Both were benefits for the Arthur Morgan School, where the two musicians had children enrolled. Ray Kennedy mixed and mastered the album, and Scott wrote the liner notes.

The thirteen tracks draw on Real Time, the duo’s 2000 studio album, and include originals by both men: O’Brien’s “Climbing Up a Mountain” and Scott’s “The Hummingbird,” “Long Time Gone” and, with Wayne Scott, “With a Memory Like Mine.” The covers are Townes Van Zandt’s “White Freightliner Blues,” Gordon Lightfoot’s “Early Morning Rain,” Hank Williams’s “House of Gold,” Keith Whitley’s “You Don’t Have to Move That Mountain,” Lefty Frizzell’s “Mom and Dad’s Waltz” and Robert Emmet Dunlap’s “Mick Ryan’s Lament.” “Keep Your Lamp Trimmed and Burning” and “Hambone” are traditional pieces arranged by the pair, and the closing track combines their “When There’s No One Around” with “Will the Circle Be Unbroken.” Scott’s “Long Time Gone” was also recorded by the Chicks.
