“Sweet Georgia Brown” was composed in 1925, with music by the bandleader Ben Bernie and Maceo Pinkard and lyrics by Kenneth Casey. Bernie’s orchestra recorded it that same year, and the song quickly became a popular hit and an enduring jazz standard.
The tune’s brisk tempo and cycle-of-fifths chord motion made it a favorite vehicle for improvisers, and it has been recorded countless times across jazz, swing, and string-band settings. It later gained a second life as the signature theme of the Harlem Globetrotters. Among bluegrass and acoustic players it serves as a swing standard — a chance to step outside the traditional fiddle-tune repertoire and trade solos over familiar changes.
