“Winder Slide” is a tune composed around 1980 by Joe LaRose of Ohio, written in the style of the old-time music recorded in north Georgia in the early twentieth century. Though it is often taken for a traditional tune, it is a modern composition crafted to sound like one.
Set in the key of D, the tune is an old-time fiddle piece in the truest sense of the style, if not of the era. The meaning of its title is uncertain: “winder” may be a dialect form of “window,” a reference to the Georgia town of Winder, or a description of a melody that winds back on itself.
This recording features the fiddler Rayna Gellert, a player known for her old-time fiddling and her work with the band Uncle Earl. She included the tune on her album “Ways of the World.”
