Kane’s River made its label debut with a self-titled album on Doobie Shea in 2000, recorded in February of that year at Doobie Shea Studios in Boones Mill, Virginia. Thompson played bass with Julie Elkins on banjo, John Lowell on guitar and Jerry Nettuno on mandolin, and guests included Rob Ickes on Dobro, Jason Thomas on fiddle, and Ronnie Bowman and Dan Tyminski. By the band’s third album, Same River Twice (Snake River, 2003), Kane’s River was a five-piece from Bozeman with Winship on mandolin and producing, and Thompson wrote five of its eleven originals, two of them with Elkins, among them “Stars and Stones.”

With Winship he made Fishing Music: A Collection of Acoustic Folk, Blues & Swing (Snake River, 2002), with Mollie O’Brien among the guests, and Fishing Music II (2009). On Growling Old Men’s Chicken Feed & Baling Twine (Snake River, 2013), a set of concert favorites the duo had never recorded, he was the only accompanist, on bass and harmony vocals.
